Air conditioning does not make cold. It moves heat out.

A central AC is a heat-moving loop: indoor coil, outdoor unit, refrigerant lines, blower airflow, and controls. Comfort depends on all of them working together.

A bigger AC can satisfy the thermostat too quickly, shorten run time, leave humidity behind, and still fail to cool rooms that lack airflow.

What a home review checks

Comfort is a chain: load, equipment, airflow, controls, and the house itself. Break one link and the symptom shows up in the rooms, not on the nameplate.

How this system actually affects comfort

The indoor coil absorbs heat from return air. The outdoor unit rejects that heat outside. The blower and duct system decide whether the cooled air reaches the rooms that need it.

Efficiency ratings help compare equipment, but they do not prove the unit is the right size for the house. Sizing, airflow, duct condition, and humidity control are the comfort story.

Two lines on a quote are worth decoding. The cooling efficiency number is SEER2 — a higher number means less electricity for the same cooling, nothing more. The other is the compressor: single-stage is all-or-nothing, two-stage has a high and a low, and variable-speed (inverter) compressors ramp their output to match the house. Long, gentle runs from a modulating compressor are what wring humidity out and hold rooms steady — the variable-speed blower is its partner, not the source.
