Nothing's running? Try these safe checks before you call.

A surprising number of no-heat and no-cooling calls turn out to be a tripped breaker, a thermostat, or a door panel that is not seated. Every check on this page is hands-only — if it needs a screwdriver, it needs a professional.

Before you start: these are hands-only checks — educational guidance, not professional advice. If you smell gas, get everyone out of the house now — do not touch a light switch and do not use a phone inside, because either one can set it off. Call the gas company or 911 from a neighbor’s. If anything on this page needs a tool, stop there and call a pro.
"It's dead. This is going to cost me a fortune."

Maybe — but check the free stuff first. The most common causes of a system that will not start cost nothing to fix: a tripped breaker, a thermostat set wrong or with dead batteries, or a furnace door that is not sitting right.

The one rule: hands only

Nothing on this page gets opened with a tool. These checks are switches, settings, doors, and filters you can reach. If a check does not bring the system back, the next step is a phone call — not a screwdriver.

No heat: five safe checks

  1. The thermostat. Make sure it is set to HEAT and the set temperature is a few degrees above the room temperature. If the display is blank or faint, replace the batteries. This sounds too simple — it brings systems back every winter.
  2. The circuit breaker. At your electrical panel, look for a breaker marked furnace or air handler sitting in the middle or OFF position. Flip it fully OFF, then back ON — once. If it trips again, stop and call: a breaker that will not hold is telling you something is wrong.
  3. The switch by the furnace. Many furnaces have what looks like an ordinary light switch on or next to them. It gets flipped by accident more often than anyone admits. Make sure it is ON.
  4. The furnace doors. The blower door has a safety switch behind it — if a panel is not seated properly, the furnace will not run at all. Press the panels in until they sit flush. Hands only; they are made to go on without tools.
  5. The filter. A badly clogged filter can overheat a furnace and shut it down on a safety limit. If the filter is dirty and you have the right size on hand, change it.
If you smell gas, this page is over. Do not flip any switches on your way out. Leave the house, then call your gas utility's emergency line or 911 from outside. That is not a troubleshooting step — it is the exit.

No cooling: four safe checks — and the frozen rule

  1. The thermostat. Set to COOL, set temperature a few degrees below the room. Blank or faint display: replace the batteries.
  2. The breakers — there are usually two. One for the indoor unit (furnace/air handler) and one for the outdoor unit. Check both; reset a tripped one fully OFF then ON, once. Trips again — stop and call.
  3. The outdoor disconnect box. The gray box on the wall near the outdoor unit. Make sure its switch or pull-out block is seated in properly — they get left loose after yard work or unplugged and never pushed fully back. Hands only: seat the block, do not open anything with tools.
  4. Give it a few minutes. Many air conditioners have a built-in delay of several minutes before they restart after power comes back. Do not judge a reset for at least five minutes.

The frozen rule. If you see ice on the copper lines or on the unit itself, turn the cooling off now and let it thaw before your service visit. A technician cannot test or diagnose a frozen system — if it is still iced up when they arrive, the visit is spent watching ice melt instead of finding the problem. Running the fan only (thermostat fan set to ON, cooling OFF) can speed the thaw. While it thaws, check the filter: starved airflow from a clogged filter is one of the common reasons a system freezes — the other big one is low refrigerant, which means a leak only a professional can find and fix.

Watch for water while it thaws. Systems are not designed to freeze, and all that melting ice has to go somewhere. Think about where your equipment sits: an attic or second-floor unit can leak through to the rooms below, a closet unit onto flooring, a basement unit across whatever is stored around it. Keep an eye on the area around and below the indoor unit while it melts, and put towels down if water shows up. Mechanical code generally requires one of several safeguards here — an overflow pan, a separate overflow drain, or a float switch that shuts the system down if water backs up — not necessarily all at once (IMC 307.2.3). They usually do their job, but do not bet the ceiling on it. Watch while it melts.

When to stop

If the checks above did not bring the system back, stop there. That is the honest line between homeowner and professional: beyond this point is refrigerant, gas, motors, and control boards — and poking further can turn a small repair into a big one.

One more thing worth saying: in dangerous weather, say so when you call. If the house is getting genuinely unsafe — very cold with a no-heat, very hot with a no-cooling — tell the service company plainly. Reputable companies triage those calls first.
