Refrigerant moves the heat. It does not get used up.

Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat into and out of your home. The rules around it changed in 2025 — here is what that actually means for a system you own and a system you might buy.

R-410A is being phased down, not switched off. A system that uses it still runs, can still be repaired, and can still be recharged from existing supply for years. One exception: if your system is from before 2010 and uses R-22, that refrigerant really is phased out — recharges come only from recycled supply and get expensive, which changes the repair-versus-replace math.

What is actually changing

New equipment built from 2025 on moves to lower-impact A2L refrigerants such as R-454B and R-32. The change is about what factories install going forward, not a deadline on the unit in your yard.

What the refrigerant change really means

Refrigerant is not fuel. It cycles around a sealed loop, absorbing heat indoors and releasing it outdoors, and a properly installed system does not consume it. If a system is "low on refrigerant," it almost always has a leak that should be found and fixed, not just topped off.

Under federal rules, the high-impact refrigerant R-410A is being phased down in steps. That raises its long-term price and pushes manufacturers to newer fluids, but it does not make your current system illegal or unserviceable. You are not required to replace a system that is working.

The new A2L refrigerants — R-454B and R-32 are the common ones — have a much lower global-warming impact. They are classified as mildly flammable, so they call for updated equipment, leak detection, and trained handling. That is a reason to use a qualified installer, not a reason to panic.

The honest decision point is repair versus replace, and it should be made on the numbers: the age of the system, the cost of the repair, and your energy bills — not on fear about refrigerant. When you do buy new, the equipment will already be on the new refrigerant by design.

How to think about it

Lead with the least dramatic step that fits your situation. Refrigerant type rarely forces a decision on its own.

An R-410A system can be maintained and repaired; a leak should be found and sealed, not just recharged.

Match new equipment to the new refrigerant

If you are replacing anyway, new systems come on A2L refrigerants — installed by someone trained for them.

Decide repair vs replace on cost

Weigh age, repair price, and energy use — the refrigerant transition is rarely the deciding factor by itself.
