Bigger is the most common and most expensive HVAC mistake. The correct size comes from a load calculation on your actual house — not from the square footage, the old unit, or a rule of thumb.

An oversized system cools or heats the air near the thermostat too fast, shuts off before it finishes the job, and leaves distant rooms uneven and the house humid. More capacity often means less comfort.
Sizing is a calculation of how much heat your specific house gains and loses — its insulation, windows, orientation, and air leakage — then matching equipment to that load, not to a guess.
Every house gains and loses heat at its own rate, set by insulation, window area and direction, ceiling height, and how tightly it is sealed. A load calculation — the industry calls it Manual J — adds all of that up to find how much heating and cooling the house actually needs. Square footage alone cannot tell you; two identical-size houses can have very different loads.
Oversizing is the common error, and it backfires in specific ways. The system reaches the thermostat's target quickly and shuts off, so it never runs long enough to pull humidity out or to push air to the far rooms. You get short, hard cycles, a cool-but-clammy house, uneven temperatures, more wear, and higher bills — the opposite of what the bigger number promised.
Contractors sometimes oversize because it is the safe guess: a too-big system will never get a "it's not keeping up" call, even though it quietly underperforms. The honest path is more work up front — an actual load calculation — and a system that fits.
Right-sizing is a chain of standards: Manual J finds the load, Manual S selects equipment that matches that load, and Manual D sizes the ducts to deliver it. Skip any one and even a perfectly rated unit cannot deliver comfort to the rooms.
Do the calculation first; pick equipment second; deliver it third.
